I thought that St.Patrick’s Day was a suitable day to launch a potato CSA.  I imagine many of you are drinking green beer and singing Irish folk songs, but when you get home I hope you consider becoming a share member of Earth Apple Farm.

Earth Apple Farm (EAF) is a small-scale, aspiring veggie farm that is celebrating its first year in the ground with a potato CSA.  Community Supported Agriculture (or CSA) is a way for consumers and farmers to partner up in sharing the benefits and risks involved with food production.  Members of the CSA purchase a share of the crop at the beginning of the growing season, which helps the farmer cover most of the start-up costs.  With this particular farm, you’re also supporting the birth and incubation of a new farmer, which translates into increasing local food security in a time when the average age of our farmers is 65 years.

Since this is EAF’s first year of operation I thought it safe to start small and simple, by beginning with something I know well– potatoes!  The purpose of this year, besides growing lots of yummy spuds is to learn, have fun, work hard and engage with food lovers and the agricultural community in Abbotsford, BC, home of EAF.  Throughout the years more and more vegetables and fruit will be added on farm leading to a full vegetable CSA.  However, since taters were my inspiration, special attention will always be paid to them at EAF with new kinds introduced each year.

If you’re interested in learning more about the CSA and how to become a member, please check out the rest of the pages on this site, specifically the Potato CSA page.  If you’re interested in following EAF as she develops throughout the seasons you can follow the blog updates on the home page.
